Bluffton SC Vacation FAQ | Common Questions Answered

Question 1

When is the best time to visit Bluffton, SC?

Accepted Answer

Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) are the sweet spots. The weather is mild — highs in the 70s and low 80s — the humidity is manageable, and the Lowcountry landscape is at its most beautiful. Spring brings azaleas and dogwoods; fall brings cooler evenings and the start of oyster season. Summer is popular with families but hot and humid, with temperatures regularly in the 90s. Winter is the best-kept secret: mild days, uncrowded restaurants, and significantly lower rental rates.

Question 2

Is Bluffton worth visiting, or should I just stay on Hilton Head?

Accepted Answer

Bluffton and Hilton Head serve different travel styles. Hilton Head is a resort island with beaches, chain restaurants, and a polished vacation infrastructure. Bluffton is a real town with a historic district, independent restaurants, local galleries, and a pace that feels genuinely unhurried. Many visitors find that staying in Bluffton and day-tripping to Hilton Head's beaches gives them the best of both — the character of a real place with easy beach access when they want it.

Question 3

How far is Bluffton from Hilton Head Island?

Accepted Answer

Old Town Bluffton is about 20 minutes from Hilton Head Island's main beach areas by car via US-278. Traffic can add time in summer, especially on weekend afternoons. There's no toll to cross onto Hilton Head from the Bluffton side.

Question 4

How far is Bluffton from Savannah, Georgia?

Accepted Answer

Bluffton is about 35 minutes from Savannah's historic district via US-278 West and I-95 South. It's an easy and very worthwhile day trip — Savannah is one of the most beautiful cities in the South.

Question 5

What airport should I fly into for Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is the closest, about 35 minutes from Old Town Bluffton. It's served by most major airlines with direct flights from many East Coast and Midwest cities. Charleston International (CHS) is about 90 minutes north and is a good option if you find better fares or want to combine a Charleston visit with your Bluffton trip.

Question 6

What are the best areas to stay in Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Old Town is the most characterful area — walkable, historic, and close to the best restaurants and the May River waterfront. For resort-style amenities and golf, the planned communities (Palmetto Bluff, Berkeley Hall, Colleton River) are excellent but require a car for everything. For easy beach access, look for rentals near the US-278 corridor, which puts Hilton Head about 20 minutes away.

Question 7

Does Bluffton have hotels?

Accepted Answer

Bluffton has limited traditional hotel options — it's primarily a vacation rental destination. The Inn at Palmetto Bluff is the area's most notable hotel property, a luxury resort within the Palmetto Bluff community. For most visitors, vacation rentals (cottages, homes, condos) are the primary accommodation option.

Question 8

How far in advance should I book a Bluffton vacation rental?

Accepted Answer

For spring and fall travel, book 3–6 months ahead. Summer inventory — especially family-sized homes — can be claimed by January or February. Winter travel is more flexible, with good availability even a few weeks out. Old Town cottages have limited inventory and go quickly in any season.

Question 9

What is the weather like in Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Bluffton has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid (highs in the low-to-mid 90s, humidity that makes it feel hotter). Spring and fall are mild and beautiful, with highs in the 70s–80s. Winters are mild by most standards — highs in the 50s–60s, with occasional cold snaps. Rain is possible year-round; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the peak in August and September.

Question 10

What should I pack for a Bluffton vacation?

Accepted Answer

Light, breathable clothing for most of the year. In summer, add serious sun protection — the Lowcountry sun is intense. Bug spray is essential if you're spending time near the marsh or water, especially at dawn and dusk. Comfortable walking shoes for Old Town. A light layer for evenings in spring and fall. If you're visiting in winter, bring a real jacket — it can get genuinely cold, especially near the water.

Question 11

Are there mosquitoes in Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the Lowcountry is marsh country, and mosquitoes come with the territory, especially in summer and near the water. They're most active at dawn and dusk. Bug spray with DEET is effective; many rental properties have screened porches specifically for this reason. The mosquito situation is manageable and shouldn't deter you from visiting, but it's worth being prepared.

Question 12

Do I need a car in Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for most of your trip. Old Town Bluffton is walkable once you're there, but getting to Old Town, reaching the beaches, and exploring the broader area all require a car. Rideshare (Uber/Lyft) operates in the area but coverage can be inconsistent. Rent a car at Savannah airport if you're flying in.

Question 13

Can you swim in the May River?

Accepted Answer

Swimming in the May River is possible but not the primary activity — it's a working tidal river with boat traffic, strong currents, and the occasional alligator. Most visitors use the river for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and boat tours rather than swimming. For swimming, Hilton Head's beaches are the destination.

Question 14

Are there alligators in Bluffton?

Accepted Answer

Yes — alligators are common throughout the Lowcountry, including in Bluffton's ponds, lagoons, and tidal creeks. They're a normal part of the ecosystem and generally not aggressive toward humans if left alone. Keep a safe distance, never feed them, and keep pets and children away from water's edges, especially at dawn and dusk when alligators are most active.

Question 15

Is Bluffton good for families with kids?

Accepted Answer

Very much so. The beaches of Hilton Head are excellent for families, Old Town has a relaxed pace that works well with children, and outdoor activities like kayaking and dolphin watching are memorable for kids. The planned communities with pools and resort amenities are particularly family-friendly. The main consideration is summer heat — plan outdoor activities for mornings and evenings.
